Although it’s easy to assure yourself that, contrary to what you said last year, 2018 will indeed be your year, it’s often difficult to ride that wave of motivation after January’s over.

Instead, we find ourselves scrolling through memes, like you were probably doing right before you clicked on this article, or like I was doing, just before I began writing it.

Whether you’re going to get in the best shape of your life, get the best marks of your life, or just have the best time of your life, we all sometimes need an inspirational and motivational kick to remind ourselves that it’s a new year, and the same you – but better. And what better way to deliver said kick than the people in these five videos?

1. Taika Waititi – The Art of Creativity

The first video on this list comes from none other than the guy who directed the last Thor. And Boy. And the vampire one? And he was New Zealander of the Year. And, as you’ll soon learn in this video, he invented rugbaby. As well as being hilarious, Taika Waititi shares important messages about creativity, failure, and success in this TED talk.

2. Steve Jobs’ Harvard Commencement Speech

Along with J.K. Rowling, the late Steve Jobs also delivered a speech to university graduates that is equally applicable to students in high school. Although long, it’s split into three amazing stories about only being able to connect the dots in the future, the loss of his company, and facing death. It’s an awe-inspiring speech that reveals the life of one of the most successful people of all time, and how he didn’t know much more about how to get there than we do.

3. William McRaven – If You Want to Change the World, Start Off by Making Your Bed

Last year, US Navy Admiral William McRaven delivered a speech that went viral, because it is seriously inspiring. Not only will making your bed in the morning be an invaluable habit in university, it also serves as a cool metaphor for facing all of life’s challenges. There’s also epic music in the background.

4. Terri Trespicio – Stop Searching For Your Passion

Especially in high school, it’s really hard to escape the word “passion”. It’s more difficult to answer the question, “What are you passionate about?” because it’s even harder to figure that out for yourself. There’s a societal expectation that everyone has this one obsession that we need to chase in order to lead a fulfilling life. Although sometimes we do have goals, goals can change – as Terri Trespicio explains in her TED talk.

5. J.K. Rowling’s Harvard Commencement Speech

The author of one of the most successful book and movie series of all time (you may have heard of it) has lived a life remarkably full of failure. In a speech often called the most inspirational of all time, J.K. Rowling tells you all about it, and how it helped her succeed.
